CCDET Releases a revised version of CCDET I, titled CCDET: Clean Truck Check

With the latest changes to the emissions regulations for on-road diesel-powered commercial vehicles, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has fundamentally changed the way that emissions testing is performed, how testing technicians are trained, and the vehicles subject to the regulation.

CARB is moving toward a model of performing emissions testing for commercial vehicles via analysis of onboard diagnostic data, rather than testing at the tailpipe. At the same time, the regulation now applies to all commercial vehicles operated in California, not just those registered in California. Because of this, CARB needed modify its training approach to make the training available online, for free, to anyone operating commercial diesel vehicles in California. As a part of this change, CCDET would no longer manage training and credentialing emissions testing personnel for on-road vehicles. CARB now awards credentials, based on completing their free online course, available on the CARB website.

It turns out that many California fleet owners and technicians prefer to learn via in-person, hands-on training. TWI stepped in to fill the void. TWI developed an in-person, hands-on course covering the same subject matter as CARB’s online course and worked with CARB to ensure they approved of the content and approach. Though CARB still credentials testers via their online test, technicians now have the option to receive hands-on training via CCDET before taking the CARB credentialing exam.

CCDET I: Clean Truck Check includes information on the regulation, its rollout schedule, and compliance methods and includes hands-on instruction on using the Onboard Diagnostic Data (OBD) testing devices, used for newer vehicles as well as performing the SAE J1667 Snap Acceleration Test procedure, used on 2012 and older on-road commercial vehicles.

LA Trade Tech College is a member of the California Council on Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET), a consortium of California Community Colleges, the California Air Resources Board, and diesel engine manufacturers. TWI manages LATTC’s relationship with CCDET and CARB, including developing curriculum, liaising with CARB on new initiatives, managing the CCDET Website, organizing meetings, and facilitating information flow among CCDET members.
